Pay Per Click Advertising 5 Tips

March 5th, 2010

1.  Set your Goals:

Before you start your campaign you need to define your strategy and set your goals.  You have to put the metrics in that you will use to define your campaign’s success.

2.  Keyword Research:pay-per-click-advertising WebSpark Design

The most important part of a pay per click campaign is making sure that you have targeted the right keywords.  You have to find and target the same keywords that your customers are using to try to find you.  Inbound marketing 101; there are web surfers out there looking for your services and products, however, if you don’t have the right sign outside your store (keywords) then your online customers will just drive right on by your website and stop at one of your competitors.

3.  Landing Pages:

Make sure that you target the proper landing page.  If you have initiated a PPC campaign that reads ad-copy telling how wonderful the shoes that you sell are, you don’t want the link that customers click on to take them to your pet department; yes those puppies are cute and cuddly buy your customers are looking for shoes.

4.  Prepare in advance:

Pay Per Click campaigns are great for running throughout the year.  Most businesses have continued sales or specials or whatever year round.  Plan your PPC campaigns with these events.  You plan your events around the holidays; do the same with your PPC campaigns.  Don’t wait until Christmas Eve to run your Christmas specials but instead start months in advance when shoppers are getting ready to make their purchases and planning what they will buy.  Remember, many online shoppers like to shop early to allow plenty of time for their packages to be delivered on time.

5.  Testing, testing, & more testing:

A pay per click campaign is all about testing.  You create ad copy and then monitor it to see how well it is performing.  Then you go in and make a few tweaks and see if that hurts your campaign or gives you a nice lift in your conversion rate.  You may change your bids or even add some more keywords.  You have to play with things and tweak them until you find the process that works.  This is usually why businesses hire outside marketing agencies and PPC consultants to manage their PPC campaigns.

What is Blogging?

March 4th, 2010

bloggingBlogging may have began as online diaries for people, however, this online communication tool has transcended into so much more.  There are so many possibilities with blogging that by using your imagination and creativity, there is no end to the uses of a blog.

A blog usually consist of a title, headline, body, post date, comments, tags, and more.  A great feature of a blog is its ease of customization.  You can select your template, which is usually provided by the blogging company you are registered with.

Blogs are excellent communication tools.  You can create one on whatever topic you like; your life, interest or just vent to the world.  Many blogging sites (such as Blogger or Wordpress) offer free registration, however, for a business blog it isn’t recommended to go with these free alternatives because the user loses a lot of control and a visitors tend to see these free blogs as less credible than a customized blog.

Blogging has blossomed from being a simple place to express your thoughts to a booming business.  Bloggers have become so important with helping to influence buyers and spreading news throughout the web, that companies search them out and offer them large amounts of money just to blog about their products.  Some even predict that blogging may one day completely replace traditional news sources as the way people get their news.

Pay Per Click Management — 5 Tips

February 26th, 2010

Pay per click management is a very simple process that can become one of the most complex projects that you take on.  Now, to make sense out of that statement.

There are some issues you need to take into consideration when starting your campaign.  You need to conduct the best keyword research as possible, you must fill your web site pages up with these keywords, and you need to make sure the landing pages that you point your ads to are the optimal pages for that individual ad.

Pay Per Click MangementHere are 5 tips to get you started:

  1. Study the actual user searches that led to the clicks, particularly those that convert.
  2. Look for new and different combinations of words.
  3. Spend time on your site studying how products are described and presented.   Then go to your competitor’s site and do the same thing.
  4. Study what products are sold from the top keywords and consider constructing landing pages for those keywords that highlight those products.
  5. Employee A/B testing (test to see if one landing page gives you a better conversion rate than another).

Your Website is an Employee Too

February 25th, 2010

lazyMany times we see clients that have made sizable investments into building a beautiful website, but then it sits on the Internet like an old abandoned building, or even worse, stands around on a smoke break, like some questionable employees do, just collecting a pay check.  Well, take into consideration that your website is an employee that works for the company like everyone else.  If it doesn’t perform then it may be time to send it to the un-employment line, or at least give it a stern talking too.

The problem with creating a website in today’s environment, is understanding why you are creating it and what you are going to use it for.  Yes, it is no secret that if you want to do business in 2010 and beyond, you need to have a website to be taken seriously.  However, don’t just have one designed and created just because you read an article that said you should.  You need to have a complete plan on how making this investment is going to pay off for your business before you even think of having it designed.  The key is you want to design it to meet your goals not wrap your goals around its design.

Another key point to remember is that creating a website is an ongoing effort.  The worst mistake you can make is creating a website and then just leaving it on the Internet and hoping that the magic god of traffic will refer you customer after customer.  You have to be an active manager of your website or hire managers for your website, just as you do your employees.  You have to set goals and objectives for your website to meet.  Make sure your website finishes its projects on time. When making an investment you have to either constantly cultivate it yourself, or hire a professional to do it for you.  Make sure that if you invest in building an online presence, that presence isn’t  just left to run however it sees fit.  You are the boss and your website is an employee, tell that lazy bum to get to work.

Using Keyword Research to Increase Your Traffic

February 24th, 2010

Choosing the correct keyword for your search engine optimization campaign can be one of the most important aspects of your campaign.  There is nothing worse than spending hours and hours doing keyword research, filling your website pages up with these keywords, watching the traffic come in but not getting a single conversion.  If your keywords don’t match the products you want to sell (bring you qualified leads for your business), then it doesn’t matter how much traffic you receive, you won’t make a sell.

The goal of keyword research is to find the most relevant keyword that returns the most searches.  Large, well-optimized sites with good relevant content can rank for competitive terms with very little work; however, smaller sites need a ton of work to rank for very competitive terms because there’s less relevant content to.keyword-research

When we look at keyword research, our first goal is to find the keyword that is most relevant to each page we’re optimizing. Powerful pages can support competitive phrases if the site, links, and content support the keywords.

Being realistic about what a page can do is an extremely important step in choosing the right keyword for that page.  There have been countless occasions that I have reviewed a client’s site and found that their list of keywords receive zero traffic searches, or are so competitive that the client’s site and budget will move them to about the third page of rankings.

Here are tips to keyword research

  • Pick valid initial keywords
  • Use a variety of sources
  • Search from the point of view of your potential customers
  • Get the most possible amount of key phrases
  • Keep the keywords that will attract the target audience
  • Pick the small-medium competitive keyword phrases
  • Spot the topics for your content (site pages, articles, blog posts, press releases, etc.)
  • Use keyword research data
  • Write website content

You are Always There To Sell Your Business To Them

February 23rd, 2010

“I wasn’t there to sell my business to him”—-You are always there to sell your business to them.

Once I was conducting marketing consulting services for a client.  They had attended a function over the weekend with key executives from different parts of the country.  He had explained to me the many different people he had met and was excited that some of these individuals may be looking for the products and service that his company provides.  I was excited and of course my first question was did you get a card from them and did you give out any of yours.  The response I received was this blog’s post opening statement, “Well I wasn’t there to sell my business to him”.  After I picked myself up off the floor from fainting, I began to remind him that we just went through an entire marketing plan that focused on networking.   I mentioned the boxes and boxes of business cards that had been ordered for him and his staff and the large amounts of time and planning that went into the design of these wonderful informative and eye catching cards.

If you are a business owner, CEO, politician, or any other high level business executive; you are always there to sell your business to them.  We have to always stay looking for that next lead or pushing our name or product out there.  Networking is one of the largest contributors to a business’s growth.  Need that next contract or trying to get involved in a new market.  If you are out talking about your business and products, you might run into someone that can help you.grey_business_group

Another side effect of always being ready to talk about your business is that just because someone isn’t interested in your service, they might meet someone that is and in order to help establish a relationship with them, he gives them your business card.  This is a win win for all three of you, but oh yea I forgot you wasn’t there to sell your business to him so there was no business card to hand anyone.  Makes me wonder, was your competitor there to sell their business?

Tips for Your E-commerce Website

February 17th, 2010

Have an E-commerce website and now you are looking for ways to help the overall improvement?

Begin with small improvements that you can tackle quickly, and then move to more complex tasks that may require extra effort.  Here are so E-commerce optimization tips to help you get started.

Accommodate All User Types

You cannot predict were in the purchase process cycle, a user is when they visit your site.  The only solution to this is to be ready for whatever part of the cycle they are in.  Some users may just be browsing or gathering information for their next purchase, while others know what they are looking for and are here to make a quick purchase and go.  Consider all of the potential user types and try to accommodate them all equally.

Create Captivating and Compelling Copy

Users come to your E-commerce site looking for a desired product and the moment they become dis-engaged or have trouble finding the product, they leave and go to your competitor’s site.  Write strong copy that keeps users engaged and also provides them with the information they need to make a good purchase decision.  Also, make sure your advertising matches what’s in the store.  Example, if you are  running a pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaign that say “Half Price Shoes”, don’t have the landing page for that campaign be the page with your highest priced shoes displayed.

Use Headings with a Punch

Headings can be an excellent tool to persuade users to stay on your website for another few seconds.  Don’t make headers too informational, you may put the reader to sleep.  Make sure they are clear and descriptive that get to the point and provide the user with a source of relevancy.

Take Advantage of Good Calls to Action

You must give users a reason to proceed and to follow through.  Use calls to action like “See Our Lowest Priced Bikes”, these types of statements are much more compelling than the famous “Click Here”.

Provide Multiple Professional Product Images

One of the main reasons of making purchases at a brick and mortar is that you are physically able to pick up and examine a product. By giving users multiple images online, E-commerce sites are able to overcome this barrier. On top of giving users multiple images, give them professional images from different angles and in different environments. Show them a shirt from the front, back, side, as well as on a model.

Allow Users to Read and Leave Product Reviews

Yes, the social media movement is here and we can’t control it, but we must learn to play by its rules if we want to compete with our competitors.   User reviews, both good and bad, are proven to increase your conversions. Furthermore, negative reviews allow users to see that the ratings are concrete and the product is in fact real with flaws.

Develop Clean Easy to Use Forms

Design and develop your forms in a clean easy to use manner. A few best practices include:

  • Require only necessary information. Do not go data happy.
  • Provide security assurance ensuring personal information is safe and secure.
  • Use descriptive buttons like “Continue to Shipping and Billing” rather than “Submit”.
  • Assist users with error handling on incorrectly completed fields.

Provide Help And Support

The first thing a majority of users are going to do before making a purchase is to make sure that you are willing, and able, to help them after a purchase is made. The quickest way to insure your support is to provide users with a phone number at all times. Furthermore you should also supply a mailing address and email address. On top of contact information you should also provide a privacy policy, return policy, shipping policy, and so forth. Providing all of this information upfront will help reassure users.

Test, Test, Test

Make a list of 3 things that bother you about your website, things you think could be improved and then test them.  You can use tools such as Google’s Website Optimizer.

How do Web Developers Price Websites?

February 17th, 2010

When developers receive request for website quotes most, but not all, usually take a similar approach.  A good place to start is by visiting the site the request was sent for and determining the following.

  1. The current content management system (CMS) being used (Word Press, Drupal, Joomla, etc.)
  2. The Scope of the Site, how many unique styling elements will be required for specialty pages?
  3. The perceived complexity of the re-design.  Does this person want a graphical masterpiece with all kinds of bells and whistles?

Crafting a brand holds a value that is hard to measure in dollars and cents.  This measurement may seem high price to one individual or to a very small business, however, to a large organization it is an investment.  Usually companies have a monetary objective behind the launch of a new design and the creation of a website so to them there is a foreseeable payoff.

webdevelopment

What are some of the things that go into the websites development that makes the price so high?

  • Graphical comps produced in Photoshop
  • Graphical splicing for optimal CSS/XHTML structure
  • CSS/XHTML production in standards-compliant fashion
  • Unique CSS/XHTML adaptation to CMS platform of choice
  • Functionality to meet client requirements

These steps require a certain degree of expertise to be completed in professional fashion. Unfortunately, people who want designs are oftentimes unfamiliar with the amount of knowledge required to pull all this off in seamless fashion.   Graphic designs do take a very artistic approach; however, there is a great deal of technical expertise that has to go into it.  It isn’t just paint and a canvas; it is extensive code and meticulous detail.  Time and professional expertise are the factors that tend clients pay for when requesting web development.
